College Football: Week 7

October 22, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I learned a little more about just how much I love college football last weekend. When faced with the dilemma of choosing between watching the Auburn-Kentucky game or the Alabama-South Carolina game, I chose both. The logic of my party was that the Bama game would be over early, making Auburn-Kentucky the obvious choice. But even if Alabama were leading South Carolina (or whomever) by 60 points, then I’d still want to watch every play. Unfortunately, that scenario didn’t play out, but thanks to the television, cables and splitter I provided, we were able to see it for ourselves.

Perhaps I was in some sort of euphoric state by being surrounded by great SEC football, but at times I felt as if I couldn’t keep up with one game, let alone two. Had the Tide been in more control of their game, I (more…)

Refs Finally Agree: They Do Suck

Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Zebras Play God with Outcome

Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Zebras Play God with Outcome

For several years now, I’ve constructively pointed out to the refs that perhaps they needed to review and perhaps reconsider the questionable calls they have made. This does not include the obviously correct calls with negative consequences on Alabama. (See, I’m not a completely irrational fan.) The criticism is often in the form of an emphatic “Refs suck!” or “Bite me, refs!” Often, my fellow fans will join in expressing their displeasure.

Perhaps it’s a function of improved technology or maybe the collective conscience of the zebras has evolved. But admissions of poor judgement seem to be increasing. In just the last three weeks, one particular SEC wrecking crew has ‘fessed up to late-in-the-game calls that (more…)

Arkansas' Unimpressive Judgement Leads to Season-Ending Injury for Bama

Arkansas' Unimpressive Judgement Leads to Season-Ending Injury for Bama

Alabama lived up to its hype surrounding its SEC opener with Arkansas last week. Not surprisingly, the Razorbacks didn’t deliver what many promised they could. QB Ryan Mallett got well acquainted with the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and he probably got a little extra conditioning, running for his life from Mount Cody.

Coming into No. 3 ranked Alabama’s home stadium with expectations as big as a pageant contestant’s hair, Arkansas probably expected to hang with the Crimson Tide. After all, they have offensive genius Bobby Petrino, and eventually that big hire was supposed to pay off.

Could their frustration of seeing a potentially promising season unravel have lead to the lapse in judgement (more…)

Breaking Down ‘Bama

Bama Easily Smokes the Hogs for First SEC Win

Bama Easily Smokes the Hogs for First SEC Win

Turns out, the mighty Mallett was no match for the Rammer Jammer Yellowhammer. The much bally-hooed QB of the Razorbacks got to test out the turf at Bryant-Denny on Saturday. And when he wasn’t doing that, he was running for his life from one of the nation’s best defenses.

Once again, the Tide benefited from my good weather karma on Saturday – even though I wasn’t there to wish away the raindrops as I was the week before. That just goes to show you the faith I have in my team. With showers over pretty much every other SEC stadium for the past two weekends, I’m thinking other fans of other teams may not have so much faith. Or either the man upstairs is a Bama fan.

Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett was supposed to be the leader of the nation’s second-offense, and the Hogs were supposed to test the Tide in their SEC opener. Keep in mind, though, (more…)

Drugs Easily Accessible in Arkansas?

Not So Fast, My Friend: Money talks and something else walks. Or in this case, throws.

Not So Fast, My Friend: Money talks and something else walks. Or in this case, throws.

I’m going to have to say yes. Reports this week came out that a Ryan Mallett pass had been clocked at 115 mph. Are lies such as this supposed to make the Crimson Tide cringe in fear over the Razorbacks’ power? After “impressive” showings over Missouri State and a Georgia team featuring a Big 12 defense, I’d turn to a marketing team to start spinning anything about my alleged greatness too.

Once you get into the Mythbusters portion of the story, complete with mathematics and tests, I pretty much check out, but I’d put my faith into what an engineer or someone similarly brilliant says. Even if he might be from Auburn 🙂

By the way, the person who “backs up” this “fact” is (more…)

Blast From the Past: Bama-Arky 2000

Bama Football 2000: Year of the Tears

Bama Football 2000: Year of the Tears

As Bama gets into the SEC portion of its schedule, I’ve decided to add a new feature to the blog where I reminisce about a game from the past featuring the week’s opponent. It would be difficult to narrow my Alabama-Arkansas memories down to just one game, but I’ve chosen one of the most poignant, though not victorious remembrances.

The year was 2000, thankfully, what would be the end of the Mike DuBose era at Alabama. Of the three games we won that season, I was present at two. The third game was Vanderbilt, which to the SEC what Mississippi is to the South, as in “Thank God we’re not Mississippi.” No matter how bad our fortunes were, at least (more…)
