College Football: Weeks 10 and 11

November 21, 2009

So many things going on, so little time to get to a blog, hence, the second two-week installment. Just as Mack Brown whined his Longhorns to No. 2 in both the AP and BCS polls, Texas’ “impressive” (read “blowout”) win over Central Florida dropped them a spot in the BCS, which (unfortunately) is the only one that matters. At least he’s still the second prettiest girl in school, according to the glorified popularity poll, the Associated Press.

Florida maintained its No. 1 status in both polls, thanks in part to their “brand” and obviously not their off-off-Broadway offensive show against Vanderbilt and South Carolina. The ‘Dores, who haven’t won a conference game all season, were only beaten by a mere 24 points by a PC (post-concussion) Tebow-led team that should (more…)

Putting the ‘BS’ in BCS

Should We Settle for the BCS?

Should We Settle for the BCS?

Cue the violins, dust off the wine openers and prepare the cheese platters. The first BCS polls have been released, and the whining has JUST begun. Must we really endure this for six weeks until the final BCS bowl selections are made? Texas coach Mack Brown led the charge even before the initial standings were announced on Sunday.

Heading into the Longhorns-Sooners matchup in Dallas, Brown took a jab at the latest AP poll, in which Alabama jumped Texas to take over the No. 2 spot. He announced to ESPN that he and his team knew who the No. 2 team in the country really was. Yes, Mack, that would be the team that did NOT struggle against Colorado the week before.

But the wine-and-cheese appetizer served up over the AP poll was barely consumed before the BCS rankings parlayed it into the first dish of what I expect to be a seven-course meal. ESPN’s College Football Live crew was trying to goad USC coach Pete Carroll into being outraged, as they were, over (more…)

College Football: Week 5

October 8, 2009

After a relatively upset-free weekend of college football (sorry, Houston, no one took you that seriously anyway), you would think we would know more about some football teams, especially in the SEC, than we actually do. One thing we do know is that finally, FINALLY the pollsters are getting some sense about them. Perhaps it was an off week that helped Bama steal away a No. 1 vote in the AP poll and get its first first place vote from the USA Today-ers. Or maybe it was the real possibility of Florida’s championship hopes slipping away as Tebow is a question mark for the Gators’ “biggest” game this season against LSU.

With Florida and Texas both idle this week (at least they have a rest from playing such powerhouses as Louisiana-Monroe and Charleston-Southern), Bama took care of business in Lexington. Should it be any surprise? This is a school where fans camped out for Midnight Madness basketball tickets DURING A FOOTBALL WEEK AGAINST AN SEC OPPONENT THAT HAPPENS TO BE (more…)

Bama Proves Backups Are Pretty Good

Bama Proves Backups Are Pretty Good

Despite being on the road (traveling to Tuscaloosa for the Bama-North Texas game), I was able to keep up with many of the bigger games this weekend. As schedules move into conference play, we’re going to know more and more about a lot of teams. Finally, we know a little more about some of the question marks after Saturday.

Florida is a little overrated. If Tennessee can hold them to only a 10-point margin of victory, I believe the Gators are beatable. Since the (only)-three-time national champions won, I’m sure we’ll soon see footage of some impassioned Tebow speech that help lift the team to victory. Blah, blah, blah. I was cheering for neither team. How does a Bama fan (or any other) pick the lesser of the two evils? You don’t. Your options are a) tie; b) the world to end; or c) Tebow to be injured. If C happens, then you can kind of cheer for Florida. Or not. Usually my rule is you cheer for the lower ranked team, so as to (more…)

Big Blue Bus Just Getting Cranked Up

Richie Rich Blue Over Players' Allegations

Richie Rich Blue Over Players' Allegations

Current and former players coached by Michigan’s Rich Rodriguez took the driver’s seat in making allegations that they practiced too long, breaking NCAA rules and effectively throwing their leader under the bus. Just when Michigan was about to wipe the slate clean, shaking off losses in recent seasons to Appalachian State and Toledo, to get the annual chance to start anew. Part of me wonders whether these “current and former players” were West Virginia fans who infiltrated Ann Arbor to gather information to take down Richie Rich. If so, I’d almost be impressed that there existed (more…)
